COMMACT is an organisation committed to the promotion and support of people-centred development.
Its members are organisations of a non-governmental, voluntary, nonprofit, community-based or social enterprise character that are committed to COMMACT’s Vision. People and organisations in government, academia, the media and the private sector who share COMMACT’s vision of people-centred development can be associate members.
Vision
COMMACT sees people-centred development as a process of empowering and enabling poor and marginalised individuals, groups and communities:
- to expand their personal and collective skills, capacities and resources;
- to gain voice, dignity and self-respect;
- to achieve autonomy in their actions and decision-making capabilities;
- to participate fully and actively in wider society;
- to ensure that the development of society as a whole is sustainable and equitable in terms of rights and responsibilities.
- to increase the control they have over their lives
Scope
The work and concerns of COMMACT’s members span the whole spectrum of development needs: economic, social, political, cultural, educational and environmental. COMMACT believes that:
- people-centred development involves using the human, natural, technological and financial resources of the world for the common good;
- people-centred development is a continuing process that aims to transform existing power relationships by empowering marginalised people and their communities;
- such transfer of power to people and communities will enable them to gain greater control over the decisions and actions which affect their lives and participate more fully and actively in wider society;
- in consequence, our world will be more just, equitable and sustainable.
Recognising the particular needs of minority and indigenous groups, and in particular of women and young people, COMMACT is particularly committed to achieving equality for these groups and to the greater recognition of their needs and potentials in the implementation of development policies.
